Prep to Finish: Fine Finish Student Workshop
This week, Prep to Finish worked with the students of the Randolph Technical Career Center on a two day workshop focusing on fine finishes for furniture items. After weeks of careful planning with RTCC program instructor Tim Murphy, the students all created furniture projects that would require fine finishes. The furniture grade projects included end tables, coffee tables, cutting boards, turned bowls, a jewelry box, a tool box, and even an antique gun stock restoration/refinish.
We were particularly impressed with the mastery these students showed of fine woodworking skills. The students demonstrated working knowledge and experience in advanced techniques such as spline and biscuit joinery, and mortise and tenons. Prep to Finish joined in for the finish end of the projects.
On the first day of this two day workshop series, Prep to Finish travelled to Randolph to work with the students in their own shop. This portion of the program focused specifically on taking the furniture pieces from rough construction form to fully prepped for finish. PtF Trainers Todd Pudvar and Scott Burt taught the students how to use Festool sanders, abrasives and HEPA extractors to prepare their wood surfaces for finishing.
Emphasis was placed on the practical matters of excess dried glue removal, proper edge breaks, grit selection, and how to progress from rough to fine sanding through proper abrasive grit steps. A couple of the projects even used the Festool Surfix oil system for immediate “lock in” of sanded table top surfaces. It was a very productive and active day of hands on surface prep learning for students.
Day Two of this series featured the RTCC program coming to the Prep to Finish facilities to learn the skills of fine sprayed finishes, and the safe use of Graco HVLP spray technologies, and Lenmar waterborne clear finishes. Each student had the opportunity to be trained by Spray Tech Extraordinaire, Todd Pudvar. Students finished their own wood creations, while observing and learning from each other during the collective process. All of the student work turned out very well. Everyone involved in this two day series enjoyed the immediate gratification of taking rough form woodworking projects through final finish stage in just a matter of two days.
We would very much like to thank our Prep to Finish Full Program Sponsors for making this Fine Finish Student Workshop possible: Benjamin Moore, FestoolUSA, and Graco. Thank you for making what you make and helping us get it all into the hands of students, so that they can learn the safest and most professional ways to work.
